One of the most enjoyable activities you can do with your toddler is reading a book.
It is an interactive time where you get to enjoy a peaceful activity with your toddler, while they get to listen to your voice telling an interesting story. You both win.

These times should be savoured, so ensure you’re making the most out of these opportunities. Here are some things to keep in mind when reading to your toddler.

Start with the Cover Page

Don’t ignore the cover! Before you start the story, you should look at the artwork on the cover and discuss what the story could be about. You’ll open the imagination of your toddler by encouraging them to think creatively.

Let them Turn the Pages

Your toddler probably can’t read yet, but they’ll want to feel involved. Let them turn the pages so that it feels like a team effort. Don’t worry if they skip pages – you can fill in the blanks if it is truly necessary.

Show them the Words

They may not know what they mean yet, but it’s a good idea to encourage an interest in words. It’ll make learning to read much easier down the line.

Make it Interesting

Don’t just read the words and show the pictures. Make the story an interactive experience. Ask your child questions, and get them to make observations about the characters and events.

Find their Favourites

You don’t have to avoid reading the same book over and over again. If your toddler enjoys particular stories, then it is a good idea to repeat them. This will build their interest in books, which will both make them happy now, and more enthusiastic about reading in the future.
